One of the rising young talents in U.S. Track & Field, Kamani enjoyed a sterling prep career at Westbury High School in Houston, where he was the state champion in the 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles his senior year. He is the Texas state record holder in the 300m with a career prep best of 35.76, and he broke the national HS record holder in the 400 hurdles (50.8). Kamani received the Houston scholar athlete award and earned high school All-American honors in the 300 and 400 meter hurdleswas the state runner-up at 300m hurdles his junior seasonhis sister, Nzingah was also a hurdler at Baylormajored in information systems at Baylorqualified for the final in the men's 400m hurdles at the NCAA Championships three straight yearsBayano and teammate Michael Smith finished 1-2 respectively at the 2001 NCAA Outdoors, the first time any school has swept the first two positions in that event at a single championship. After winning, Bayano told Track & Field News, "It feels really good to be back on top," he said. "I didn't realize how good it feels to walk back up on the awards stand. It's a lot different being 1st than 2nd."
